A new chapter for Brixton House — plus what’s happening in Brixton this week
Sometimes Brixton reminds you exactly why we all need more community in our lives. We all need a place that feels like we belong. I felt that again this week reading Brixton House’s Giving Tuesday campaign. It isn’t just another fundraiser; it’s a reminder of how fragile and powerful local community can be at the same time.
Since opening its doors in 2022, Brixton House has given more than 70,000 people a place to see themselves on stage — literally. Two hundred and fifty shows, 1,133 performances, thousands of school kids and young creatives walking into a theatre that actually speaks their language. In a borough where space, attention, and opportunity are always under pressure, that’s no small thing.
But here’s the part that lands hardest: none of this exists without community backing it. The mentoring, the youth training, the partnerships with local artists, the creative programmes designed for people who don’t usually get invited into these spaces — it all depends on us deciding that these stories matter.
And they do. I’ve seen teenagers come out of shows looking changed. I’ve seen elders light up at events that feel like home. I’ve seen Brixton House hold space for conversations that other institutions wouldn’t touch.
Giving Tuesday isn’t about plugging a gap; it’s about strengthening a cultural engine that already delivers for Brixton in ways that numbers can’t fully capture. It’s an invitation to help keep theatre accessible, talent nurtured, and local stories centred.
Here’s what I’m doing: donating to the House Fund and sharing this with people who understand that culture survives when we protect it.
