We’re 10 days into dry January…how are you holding up? If you’re opting to stay inside instead of braving the cold this month, we’ve curated a list of movies and TV shows that are filmed right here in the heart of Brixton! Get cosy and watch some amazing stories take place on the streets we know and love.
Honeytrap (2014) - Amazon Prime
The 15-year-old protagonist becomes implicated in a gang plot to lure a young admirer of hers to his death. This film was unusual in depicting gang life through the eyes of a teenage female protagonist.
Attack the Block (2011) - Netflix
Before John Boyega rose to fame in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), he played Moses, the protagonist of Attack the Block. The film is about a gang of kids fighting to protect their Brixton tower block against an alien invasion. The fact that writer/director Joe Cornish is a long-time resident of the area adds to the film’s authenticity. You may recognise Brixton’s Myatt Fields Estate, which features prominently.
Black Joy (1977) - BFI Player & Amazon Prime
Norman Beaton of Desmond’s fame stars as Dave in this classic. Beaton’s character is a gambler and miscreant who winds up educating a young, innocent Guyanese man about life on the streets of Brixton. Several local spots can be seen in the film, such as Atlantic Road, Villa Road and Brixton Market.
Last Christmas (2019) - BBC iPlayer
Kate is a young woman subscribed to bad decisions. Working as an elf in a year-round Christmas store is not good for the wannabe singer. However, she meets Tom there. Her life takes a new turn--that seems too good to be true.
Queenie (2024) - Channel 4
Queenie Jenkins is a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in south London, living in between two cultures and entering neatly into neither.
Secret Invasion (2023) - Disney+
In Secret Invasion, set in the present-day MCU, Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill, and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth.

Electric Brixton in January:
CupcakKe
17th January - 7pm
Bold and outspoken Chicago rapper CupcakKe has achieved viral success and critical acclaim with her brazen, unapologetically explicit songs and videos that channeled the likes of Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, and Gangsta Boo. Her work explores sexuality in graphic detail, and while many of her songs are humorous and playful, she has more serious, introspective material that deals with sexual abuse, racial issues, and LGBTQ empowerment. She debuted in 2016 with a pair of raunchy EPs and a full-length, Audacious, following with the critically acclaimed Queen Elizabi*ch (2017) and Ephorize (2018).
