Uprising festival: celebrating Brixton’s 1980s activism and cultural heritage. And don't miss lunch for just £2.95 today at The Black Farmer
Brixton’s creative spirit takes centre stage with UPRISING, a months-long festival at Brixton House theatre marking 40 years since the 1985 Brixton Uprising. Curated by Danny Bailey and Tobi Kyeremateng, UPRISING honours Brixton’s activist legacy and Black British culture by amplifying local stories from the Windrush Generation to the 80s. The festival runs from June to October, kicking off with a Windrush celebration and closing with a finale honouring 1980s Brixton icon Pearl Alcock.
This Saturday 12 July, Brixton House invites you to a free Your Memories of ’70s/’80s Brixton scanning social. If you danced at Brixton’s reggae parties or browsed its record shops, bring your old photos and memorabilia to be digitised by the Museum of Youth Culture – your snapshots might even feature in a future exhibition. Hosted by rock singer Lorna Gee, it’s a chance to reminisce and celebrate the people who shaped that era’s buzzing youth scene, especially the women.
UPRISING isn’t just about looking back – it also sparks cross-generational conversations. A new Coldharbour Talks podcast and art installations ensure Brixton’s story of resistance and creativity continues. Join the celebration and feel Brixton’s community spirit at UPRISING.

Superman: Legacy – Fri 11 Jul, 8:00 PM. Director James Gunn launches the DC Universe's new era with a "singular blend of epic action, humour and heart" in this fresh take on the Man of Steel. David Corenswet dons the cape as a younger, idealistic Clark Kent (with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor) striving to prove that truth and heroism never go out of style. Rotten Tomatoes: 83% (critics). A hopeful comic-book reboot that critics praise for its "big, beating heart" at the centre of the spectacle.
28 Years Later – Sat 12 Jul, 8:30 PM. "Academy Award®-winning director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland reunite" for a terrifying yet thoughtful new chapter in the 28 Days/Weeks Later saga. This post-apocalyptic thriller infuses zombie horror with timely social commentary, tapping into post-Brexit isolation and post-pandemic anxieties. Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson lead a hardened survivor ensemble, while Ralph Fiennes delivers a "towering" performance as a morally complex antagonist. Rotten Tomatoes: 88% (critics). Some are already calling it "the best film of the year so far" for reinvigorating the genre with equal parts brains and blood.
Jane Austen Wrecked My Life – Sun 13 Jul, 5:00 PM. A charming French romantic comedy about a clumsy Parisian bookseller who chases an Austen-worthy love story while on a writing residency in England. Camille Rutherford stars as Agathe, a hopeless romantic discovering that real life – and love – can't be scripted like a novel. Critics call it "a modern, literate and sweet riff on finding the kind of happiness that can't be found in a book" that "will make your day". Rotten Tomatoes: 84% (critics). An uplifting, bookish twist on the classic rom-com, perfect for a feel-good Sunday watch.
At Brixton House Theatre
