Did you know that Brixton was home to one of London’s first-ever public art murals, painted in 1981? The “Brixton Academy Mural” on Stockwell Park Walk was created as part of a community-led initiative to showcase local stories and celebrate the area’s cultural diversity. This colorful masterpiece sparked a wave of mural projects across Brixton, turning the neighborhood into an open-air gallery.
Today, Brixton remains synonymous with creativity, from its iconic street art to its bustling markets and live music venues. This week’s newsletter dives into the heart of Brixton’s culture, featuring new spots to eat, live performances, and community highlights that continue to make our neighbourhood so extraordinary.
Let’s explore the best of Brixton together! 🎨

CULTURE AND EVENTS

For The Love: Celebrating Culture, Community, and Life-Saving Blood Donation in Brixton
SIEGE Industries and NHS Blood & Transplant are thrilled to announce, “For The Love”, a unique cultural event at Brixton House on Sunday 26th January, to mark the opening of the new NHS blood donor centre in Brixton. This special event blends art, food, music, and a powerful purpose, in partnership with Black Eats LDN, Arts Meets Culture, Akanji Studios and Cultur.FM, shining a light on the need for more donors of Black heritage.
The NHS needs over 250 blood donations every day to meet the needs of patients with Sickle Cell, which is more common in people of Black heritage. However, only 3% of regular blood donors are of Black Heritage. The Brixton Donor Centre is a step toward closing that gap.
Caribe
One of Brixton’s very own, Keisha Sakarah, had a great time cooking in the little container restaurant Caribe. Now that the space is closed, she’s about to launch her debut cookbook of the same name.
In Caribe, Keshia takes readers on an expansive journey through the social and culinary history of the Caribbean. Caribe is the first cookbook to comprehensively explore Caribbean food culture, covering 23 nations including Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St Lucia, Montserrat, Guadeloupe and many more.
Caribe will be available for purchase on 20th March 2025 - watch this space!
