Brixton Village & Market Row Chronicles: Brixton’s Legacy of Firsts Continues with The Black Farmer
For all our new readers, we are delighted to welcome you to the BCC List, marking the latest collaboration between Brixton Culture Capital and Brixton Village. This is your insider’s pass to the bold, creative, and community-rooted energy that makes Brixton what it is.
Brixton has always been a place of firsts.
The UK’s first purpose-built department store, Bon Marché, started here in 1877.
London’s first Marks & Spencer opened here in 1903.
We sparked food revolutions with the original Franco Manca and the very first Honest Burgers, in the 2000s.
Now, another first is redefining the high street—introducing the UK’s first supermarket designed for community connection: The Black Farmer, founded by Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones MBE, right in the heart of Market Row.
As Emmanuel-Jones puts it:
“We want shopping to be relational, not just transactional.”
This isn’t just a grocery store—it’s a space for calm, connection, and community. With fresh coffee, soft music, lush greenery, and a mezzanine lounge that invites you to linger, The Black Farmer redefines what retail can feel like. Stocked with produce from his Devon farm and goods from Black and independent makers, it’s a bold example of how premium retail and cultural authenticity can thrive right here in Brixton.

Each week, we’ll bring you stories, local gems, and voices shaping the future of Brixton and Brixton Village—while honouring their powerful pasts.
