A Blue Plaque Tour Of Brixton

Over the years, Brixton has been home to some pretty famous faces.
And tons of them are celebrated with blue plaques to remind us of their legacy. English Heritage started it, but the good people of Brixton finished it. Here are some of the top blue plaques that will be your guide to the famous faces of Brixton (and some are more official than others…).
Charlie Chaplin: Did you know that this famous actor and filmmaker lived in Glenshaw Mansions, SW9 0DS? Neither did we!
Henry Havelock Ellis: Brixton has always been ahead of the times. So it’s no wonder that this pioneer in the scientific study of sex lived in Dover Mansions, SW9 7QF.
Winifred Atwell: Where would we be without this woman, who opened the UK’s first Black hair and beauty salon at Railton Road / Chaucer Road SE24 0NY?
C.L.R. James: Railton Road has been home to many fierce fighters for change. Cyril Lionel Robert James, West Indian Writer and Political Activist lived at number 165.
Olive Morris: Another pioneering activist, who fought determinedly for squatters rights from her home at 2 Talma Road SW2 1AU.
The Dark and Light Theatre Company: Britain’s first Black Theatre Company produced more Black plays in two years than the whole of English theatre had in the previous 25. And that’s how we do it around here. 50 Knatchbull Road, SE5 9QY.
