Your Brixton Weekend Starts Here: Hidden Stories, Free Gift Wraps & What’s On
Tonight at The Ritzy, artist Rudy Loewe, the mind behind The Congregation, the new mural covering the entrance of Brixton Tube Station, is stepping on stage to unpack the stories behind the work.
Loewe went deep for this commission, with months in the archives, interviews with elders, long walks through the noise, colour and chaos of Brixton’s everyday life. The finished mural unfolds across 20 scenes: the Windrush arrivals, SisterMatic’s sound-system legacy, Olive Morris, Pearl Alcock’s underground bar, Healthy Eaters, the crush of Electric Avenue, and even the quiet poetry of ordinary locals like CJ River and their child.
But tonight isn’t just for historians. It’s for artists, designers, photographers, and anyone curious about how public art like this gets made: how an idea becomes a commission, how a neighbourhood’s spirit is turned into colour and line, and how creatives can get involved in future projects with Art on the Underground.
It’s also for anyone who simply wants to understand Brixton better: its contradictions, its roots, and the stories we walk past without noticing. If you care about Brixton’s past or want to help shape its future, this room will be full of the people who make that happen. (→ Details)
