Brixton Culture Capital | 01.08/2024
Hello, Brixtonians!
If you happen to be strolling through Brixton and come across crowds, protests, or celebrations, it's because today is Brixton Blackout Reparations Day. This event is organized by the Afrikan Emancipation Day Reparations March Committee and the Stop The Maangamizi Campaign, and it is part of a larger movement aimed at addressing deep-rooted issues. This year’s theme highlights unity and survival, connecting social and environmental justice issues.
For us, this is another reminder of the values of Brixton and its people. Therefore, why not take some time today to explore and learn about this crucial movement? Head over to Windrush Square, the heart of Brixton, where you can immerse yourself in the day's activities. Enjoy some jerk chicken from our local vendors, sip on fresh coconut water, and soak up the sun while you listen to live music and talks. It’s a perfect way to experience the rich cultural tapestry of our community and be reminded of our values of equity, fairness, activism and advocacy. While you're there, take a moment to engage in the ongoing conversations about why reparations and justice. The event provides an excellent opportunity to educate yourself on what the movement is fighting for.
Enjoy the day, Today is about educating ourselves and others. By participating, we spread awareness and foster a more informed and just society and let's celebrate Brixton's rich heritage and bright future!
