Brixton's Getting a Mascot – And It’s Not What You’d Expect! You need to decide!
Brixton Culture Capital | 15.08.2024
So, Brixton Brewery has ruffled some feathers with their latest petition, proposing we make pigeons the official mascot of Brixton. Yes, you read that right! The humble, often-overlooked pigeon might be the new face of our beloved town. Here’s our take on this quirky proposal.
A Mascot for Brixton? Count Us In!
First off, we are behind the idea of Brixton having an official mascot. A mascot isn’t just a cute critter or a funky logo; it symbolises our community identity and pride. Imagine a rallying point that brings us all together, like Derby's Ram or Leicester's Fox. It could boost tourism, brand the town even more, and be a fun scapegoat when things go sideways – “Blame it on the pigeon!” Whether on T-shirts, murals, or keychains, our mascot could make Brixton even more iconic and memorable.
But Pigeons? Really?
We’ll be honest: when we first heard about pigeons as the proposed mascot, we weren’t exactly cooing🤦♂️ with excitement. Pigeons are, well, everywhere and not exactly known for their glamour or grace. They are often dismissed as 'rats with wings, ' right? We worried that the pigeon might leave us with a mascot that’s more of a nuisance than a noble symbol. But then we took a second look...
It’s Growing on Us – Here’s Why Pigeons Might Fit Brixton.
These birds embody resilience and adaptability – just like us. They thrive in urban environments, finding ways to survive and flourish no matter what. That’s the spirit of Brixton, isn’t it? Pigeons are as much a part of city life as street art and market stalls. They’ve been our companions for thousands of years, sharing our streets and stories. By embracing the pigeon, we may be challenging perceptions, celebrating the overlooked, and showing that Brixton is a place where even the most underestimated can rise🤦♂️ to the top.
So, what do you think, whether you’re a Brixtonian or a Brixtonite? Give the pigeon a chance by signing the petition here, or let’s hear your thoughts.
P.S. If this takes flight🤦♂️, we’ll need some killer pigeon merch – who’s in?
