Celebration of Demonstration. Art and Protests
How we protest in Brixton and a Journey into Visual Activism
Celebration of Demonstration: Wayne Campbell’s Journey into Visual Activism
"I'm not just a photographer; I'm a visual activist," declares Wayne Campbell, the Brixton-raised photographer behind the stirring exhibition, Celebration of Demonstration. Born from the urgency and upheaval of 2020—specifically the murder of George Floyd—Campbell’s shift from traditional photography to activism transformed both his art and his identity.
Initially seeking refuge behind the lens at family gatherings, Campbell discovered that photography was a powerful way to hide and yet connect. It wasn't until a striking moment in Cuba, capturing the essence of an iconic vintage car, that he confidently wore the title of 'photographer'. However, witnessing global events propelled him beyond capturing aesthetics into documenting truth and injustice.
His current exhibition at Market Row, Brixton, reflects the vibrant spirit of activism synonymous with the community he grew up in—where he had his first fight, first kiss, and first encounter with the police. "Brixton is activism," Wayne passionately affirms.

His work spans powerful images from local and international protests, including a recent journey to Palestine, where Campbell was deeply impacted by witnessing apartheid firsthand. His photographs are more than documentation; they evoke empathy, confront discomfort, and celebrate the democratic right to protest—a right increasingly under threat.
Looking forward, Wayne envisions Celebration of Demonstration as a global platform empowering visual activists worldwide. He dreams of empathy walls in schools and communities, fostering understanding through art and activism.
