Forget Patties—Is Brixton Going Venezuelan?
Arepa & Co.: Bringing Venezuelan Flavour to Market Row
Arepa & Co.: Bringing Venezuelan Flavour to Market Row
Market Row has long been defined by its diverse culinary traditions, particularly its Afro-Caribbean heritage—think smoky jerk chicken and flaky Jamaican patties from iconic stalls like Healthy Eaters. Now, a vibrant newcomer is turning heads and tantalising tastebuds: Arepa & Co., Market Row's first Venezuelan restaurant, led by Ernesto Moreno.

What Exactly Is an Arepa?
An arepa is a warm, grilled cornmeal pocket filled generously with savoury ingredients like shredded beef, creamy black beans, sweet plantains, and melted cheese. Naturally gluten-free, it’s quickly becoming Market Row’s must-try dish.
From Venezuela to Market Row: Ernesto’s Story
Ernesto Moreno’s journey mirrors that of many immigrants who have found a home in Brixton. Arriving in London 23 years ago from Venezuela with plans to learn English, Ernesto built a successful corporate career and later moved into franchising. His passion for sharing his heritage eventually led him to Arepa & Co., initially founded by Venezuelan couple Gus and Kathy.
Recognizing their potential, Ernesto acquired the business, expanding it into a thriving restaurant chain with branches in Bethnal Green, Elephant and Castle, and now Market Row. Ernesto deliberately chose Market Row, seeing it as a community that celebrates diversity and openness to new culinary experiences.
Why Venezuelan Cuisine is Sweeter Than You Think
Many people associate South American cuisine with spicy Mexican dishes, but Venezuelan cuisine surprises with its sweet, comforting notes. Key ingredients like plantains and black beans connect it closely with Caribbean dishes popular in Market Row, creating familiar yet distinctly unique flavours.
Is the Arepa Venezuelan or Colombian?
Ernesto offers clarity on the friendly rivalry: "Arepas are pre-Colombian, originating from indigenous tribes who first cultivated maize. While Colombians typically enjoy them as a side dish, Venezuelans have elevated them into a hearty, meal-sized staple filled with diverse ingredients."
Could Latin Flavours Redefine Market Row’s Street Food Scene?
Arepa & Co. is more than just another eatery; it's an integral part of Market Row’s evolving culinary landscape. Ernesto envisions a harmonious blend of Latin American and Afro-Caribbean traditions enriching Market Row’s renowned diversity.
As locals and visitors alike discover arepas, cachapas (sweet corn pancakes), and tequeños (cheese sticks), Arepa & Co. is setting a new standard for multicultural street food in Market Row.
Next time you visit Market Row, step beyond the familiar and experience the irresistible flavours of Arepa & Co.—a true celebration of Venezuelan culture right here in the heart of Brixton.
