Exploring the Best Caribbean Food in Brixton: A Flavorful Journey
Last week, I met a Swedish couple visiting Brixton on the hunt for the best Jamaican food, and I was stumped. It hit me that I haven't tried it all, and maybe I'm not the best judge. Brixton has more Caribbean food per square mile than probably anywhere in Europe, so I thought I’d write about my favs.
Healthy Eaters on Electric Avenue is famous for its patties and healthy fish dishes, especially now that it has a rum bar. It’s complete for me.
Fish Wings and Ting ( along with their new vegan spot Veg and Ting) gets much media attention in Brixton Village, especially with the Bajan fritters that melt in your mouth and the mango chutney that goes with the Jerk chicken, rice, and peas.
But what about the underground kings with cult followings that don’t get much accolades? Often not mentioned, but those who know know.
Have you visited the D’Jerk Centre (a secret Brixton backyard kitchen), True Flavours on Acre Lane? or the social media trending Original Flava in Market House?
The D’jerk centre is run by Maureen, and it is in her garden kitchen! Everyone in my barbershop swears by it. Only in Brixton- check it out here.
True Flavours, on the other hand, is growing and has a cult following. I am heading there to try for the second time.
After asking nearly fifty people in Brixton, the top spot went to Original Flava, who people seem to travel from all around the country to take pictures of their logo. Craig and Shaun - brothers from South London - are passionate about sharing the vibrant flavours of Jamaican cuisine through “Original Flava”. Inspired by their Mum and Nanny, their Jamaican classics, like Ackee 'n' Saltfish and Curry Goat, and modern twists, such as Honey Roasted Jerk-Spiced Salmon and Plantain Beanburgers, are heavenly.
What do you think? Which ones have I forgotten that you love?
